Let's get to know Melissa
Q. What is one of your favourite psychology approaches and why?
A. Hands down, Schema Therapy. I love Schema Therapy because it just makes sense. The way we see things in the present is shaped by what happened to us in the past. I also love it because some of the techniques, such as imagery rescripting, can cause big shifts in emotions in ways that just talking about it doesn't.
Q. What drew you to a career as a psychologist?
A. I have always been interested in people's stories. I have always been curious about why people do what they do. I was in grade 11 at school and exploring career options when Australia was rocked by the awful events at Port Arthur in 1996. That was a turning point for me. I realised I wanted to deeply understand why people do what they do, and to help people when they want to change for the better, to make a better world. So I chose psychology as my first preference for uni, and the rest is history.
Q. Do you use psychology strategies in your everyday life?
A. I sure do. I incorporate strategies from different approaches into my life, mainly Schema Therapy and DBT skills. I also walk the walk by being in therapy myself at different times in my life.
Q. Favourite food?
A. A good vanilla slice.
Q. Do you have any pets?
A. I have a beloved 12-year-old rescue doggo named Mumble. Some of my clients and DBT group participants have been lucky enough to meet him when he has visited the practice.
Q. What do you like to do in your spare time?
A. I love yoga, it is so good for the nervous system. I also love thinking about travel, planning travel....and when I can, travelling to special places.
